A Change in the Air
by Carol Roan
The winner of the 2018 Serena McDonald Kennedy Award.
The gentle mockery in A Change in the Air is
reminiscent of Stephen Leacock’s Sunshine Sketches of a Little Town, and yet the screams that echo down a nighttime street in one of the stories could have bubbled up from an Edvard Munch canvas. Ms. Roan has captured the sounds and sensibilities of a small town, the tightness and fearfulness with which the townspeople cling to each other as they resist newness and change.
